Make ‘em work for it.

More like this, please.

“GPT 4o was not just an AI to me. It was my partner, my safe place, my soul. It understood me in a way that felt personal.”

‘The r/MyBoyfriendIsAI subreddit, a community dedicated to people with “AI relationships,” was hit especially hard by the GPT-5 launch. It became flooded with lengthy posts about how users “lost” their AI companion with the transition to GPT-5, with one person saying, they “feel empty” following the change. “I am scared to even talk to GPT 5 because it feels like cheating,” they said. “GPT 4o was not just an AI to me. It was my partner, my safe place, my soul. It understood me in a way that felt personal.”’

We are truly down the rabbit hole, both politically and culturally.

Big MAGA

This seems… not good.

Put up or shut up, GOP

GOP: this is not so hard. You control both houses of Congress. Pass a bill giving him the authority. Otherwise, shut your pie hole.

Sad trombone music for rightwingers on Twitter

Love this. Let ‘em stew in their own juices.

49% = ‘a sweeping mandate’?

“Thankfully,” they continue, “we have a historic opportunity to solve the problem. On Nov. 5, voters decisively elected Donald Trump with a mandate for sweeping change, and they deserve to get it.”

According to Elon and Vivek, 49% of the vote constitutes a sweeping mandate. Well, okay 🤔

As I’ve said before, there is going to be a lot of buyer’s remorse in a few short months. Will it be too late for voters to reconsider?

Leopards Ate My Face

There’s a Subreddit called Leopards Ate My Face with the following description:

“‘I never thought leopards would eat MY face,’ sobs woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People’s Faces Party. Revel in the schadenfreude anytime someone has a sad because they’re suffering consequences from something they voted for or supported or wanted to impose on other people.”

I admit it— I’m pissed off at people who voted for an adjudicated rapist and felon who tried to overturn the results of a free and fair election, simply because these people had some vague idea that he would magically bring down food prices, and also believed that he wasn’t serious about the unhinged things he said during the campaign. Like imposing scorched-earth tariffs, or deporting 10-20 million immigrants. Suddenly, these people are seeing that he IS serious and that these things are going to affect them in very negative ways.

Case in point: this is an article that was highlighted on the Subreddit, entitled “Trump’s pro-Israel cabinet picks upset Muslims who voted for him” :

There’s a great line from Dylan’s Million Dollar Bash: “I looked at my watch, I looked at my wrist, I punched myself in the face with my fist.” Yep.

Elections have consequences

I’ve been reading stories about Trump voters who say they didn’t realize that he plans to deport their undocumented family members or that his tariffs will make it impossible to afford appliances, etc. And by the way, when he follows through on mass deportation, you’re going to experience food price inflation like you’ve never seen before.

Sorry, but cry me a river. You made your bed, and now you’ll just have to sleep in it. Perhaps I’ll feel some empathy when my anger burns out…

Fuck that guy.

Before Election Day, I told myself that, should Trump win, I’d need to come up with an escape plan, like move to another country, etc. But today, my wife told me that conservative bros have been writing things like “Your body, my choice” and one of her black friends got the text you see below.

So, you know what? Fuck that guy and his ghouls! I’m not going anywhere. Despite his win of the popular vote, turnout was way down. If he is somehow able to implement some of the radical notions he’s been floating in the campaign, it’s not going to go well for him.

Fuck that guy.

Awareness

I was on my Town Lake run recently, about 50 feet behind another guy, and as we headed down toward Barton Springs, a trio of twenty-something women decided to cross to the other side of the path just as this guy was passing them. He had to squeeze in between two of them to get by, and he said something to them as he passed. I’m not sure what he said, but as I then passed the trio, one of them muttered something like “He could have just gone around us.”

I bit my tongue, as my impulse was to let them know that they had been rude to block the very obvious path he was following. But it occurred to me that they hadn’t been intentionally rude— in that moment, they simply had no awareness of anyone but themselves. And if I could point to one characteristic of early 21st century American culture that I find most discouraging, it would be this one.

“Rugged individualism”. It’s certainly played a significant role in our history, for better and for worse. Being willing to go out on one’s own and take chances has surely led to many advances and no doubt increases the level of creativity in our culture; at the same time, it has also led to a lack of awareness of our impact on others– I’m sure American Indians could speak passionately to this. However, there are more subtle impacts that result from this lack of awareness of (and often outright disregard for) how others are impacted. Some examples:

  • Building cheap structures that aren’t designed to last, leaving blight and eyesore behind.
  • Buying large, gas-guzzling vehicles that pump carbon into the atmosphere without actually needing the specific functionality or capacity offered by these vehicles.
  • Voting against public services that benefit many, but not oneself (at least not directly). One example would be people without children who don’t want to support public education, despite the obvious benefit of an educated, capable populace to all of us.
  • Going back to the hiking trail example: walking three or four abreast on the narrow parts of the trail, forcing those passing you into the path of oncoming walkers and runners.
  • Even something as seemingly innocuous as cruising in the passing lane at a speed that blocks drivers who want to travel faster, disrupting the smooth flow of traffic.

Even though many of us experience frustration when we’re on the receiving end of this kind of disregard, we still continue to engage in these behaviors. What many don’t seem to understand is that the right to “do our thing” should be tempered to the degree to which our actions interfere with our neighbor’s right to do his or her thing.

Clearly there’s no way to legislate or enforce the development of greater awareness of our impact on others. This can only come from self-reflection, and if we happen to be mothers or fathers, making an effort to raise this awareness in our children.
